Cherub Consulting Newsletter - September / October 2009

Happy Fall!

It’s been a few months since I sent out a newsletter… sometimes CEO Mom takes priority over CEO Cherub!  Thanks to the many of you that have let me know “you missed the newsletter” or “love my site”.  Building Cherub is my true passion next to being “mom”. Watch for newsletters every two months now – rather than monthly.

Keep your feed back coming.  I love hearing from you.

Fall Recipe: Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin SoupMy friend, Sharon, gave me this hearty fall soup recipe.  Quick, easy and delicious!

1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 potato, diced
6 cups pumpkin, diced
2 tablespoons olive oil
6 cups stock
2 tablespoons curry powder
¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg
½ teaspoon marjoram
½ teaspoon allspice
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Toasted pumpkin seeds
Salt and pepper

Saute onion and garlic.  Stir in remaining ingredients, except the lemon juice.  Bring to a boil and, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.  Use hand blender, or pour into standup blender or food processor, and puree.  Return soup to pot and warm if needed, stir in lemon juice.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Ladle into bowls and top with toasted pumpkin seeds.  Serves 4-6.

September Birthstone – Sapphire

Sapphire is one of the four precious gemstones – diamond, ruby and emerald are the other three.  The word Sapphire is derived from the Greek word “sappheiros” which means “precious stone”.  Shades of blue are the most popular for sapphires but they can be found in a variety of other colors such as pink, yellow and white.

Properties associated with sapphire include truth, sincerity, insight, interpretation and clairvoyance.  The color blue also symbolizes heavenly grace.

SapphireI love September and Sapphires – some of my favorite people are born this month!  My mom, daughter, niece and best friend all reflect Sapphire’s properties.

October Birthstone – Opal

Opal is the traditional birthstone for October.  Derived from the Latin word “opalus” which means “a stone” it is also said to mean “to see a change in color”.  The common Opal is milky white but as with many gemstones, it too has many different shades.  Black, crystal, fire and harlequin are all other shades and tints of Opal.

OpalProperties associated with Opal are hope, innocence, happiness, loyalty and confidence.  The Opal is used in crystal therapy to enhance visualization, imagination, dreams and healing.

SugarParenting Tip – Read the Label

Have your kids read the label on their favorite product – glucose, fructose, sugar, it’s all the same.  Take the total grams of sugar and divide it by four – that’s how many teaspoons of sugar it has.  Many breakfast cereals have more than two teaspoons of sugar in a half cup serving.  Some popular granola bars have two teaspoons of sugar per bar.  Add up how much hidden sugar your child consumes in an average day.
