Sam’s Three Eco-Living Tips for November

  1. Stop using plastic grocery bags!  Use cloth bags or boxes for your groceries and encourage those around you to do it too.
  2. Use cloth napkins whenever you can.  If you need paper towels or napkins for anything, buy recycled and use sparingly.
  3. Take the time to recycle everything you can.  Most communities have recycling pick up or drop off bins.

Homemade Salad Dressing

(adapted from Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats by Sally Fallon)

Natural Salad DressingMake your own basic salad dressing and add herbs, crushed garlic or other variations to suit your taste.

Basic Dressing – makes about ¾ cups

1 teaspoon Dijon-type mustard, smooth or grainy
2 tablespoons plus one teaspoon raw white vinegar
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon expeller-expressed flax oil

Place mustard into a small bowl.  Add vinegar and stir with a fork.  Add olive oily in a thin stream, slowly, stirring all the while with the fork, until oil is well mixed or emulsified.  Add flax oil and use immediately.

This is a much healthier and tasty dressing and costs the same as an average bottled dressing (many of which contain rancid vegetable oils, trans fatty acids and numerous additives).

Boost Your Child’s Health and Immune System the Natural Way

Through this holiday season, we and our kids tend to eat more sweets.  With sweets comes more sugar which in turn depresses our immune system and can bring on more colds, flu’s and other bugs.  Colleague, Jane Sheppard of Healthy Child Online, has written an informative, easy-to-read book called Super Healthy Kids:  Strengthening your child’s resistance to disease.  In this book, Jane tells you how to keep your kid’s healthy and vibrant naturally.  With three young children, Sam refers to her copy often!  If you’d like to check it out, click on the following link:

Super Healthy Kids

Boost your kids' health and immune system the natural way. Super Healthy Kids is a comprehensive e-book (you can get a printed paperback version as well) about what you can do to strengthen your kids health and boost the immune system to prevent disease and create increased vibrant health and vitality. There is a lot you can do, inexpensively at home, to boost your kids' immune system.

November Birthstone – Topaz

November - TopazThe Topaz used for birthstones is usually the classic golden brown to yellow, yet it may be colorless, yellow, orange, red, blue and green.  It is the hardest silicate mineral and one of the hardest minerals in nature.

According to spiritual psychologist, Doreen Virtue, PhD and clairvoyant, Judith Lukomski, in their book Crystal Therapy:  How to Heal and Empower Your Life with Crystal Energy (Hay House, 2005) topaz is considered a master stone with heightened vibrations.  For those with open hearts, it brings accelerated information and healing.  The golden topaz is also associated with Archangel Michael.

Healing Properties:  This joyful gem partners with you to attract wealth, well-being, and love, in addition to helping you fully open your crown chakra to heavenly exchange.

Message:  “As a champion of confidence, I activate your solar plexus so that you radiate personal power with integrity and honor.  Happily, I assist you in creating abundance in all ways.  Wear me when you need an energetic lift, and renewed excitement about life and hope are yours.”

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is running an iKettle campaign - an easy-to-use, online way of donating to the less fortunate in our community for Christmas. If you would like to start your own iKettle, or help to sponsor my iKettle, click here.

Eco Friendly Tips for Giving This Holiday Season

  • Re-Gift! Get your friends and family to join in for a Re-Gifting Christmas.  Sort through things you’d like to get rid of and pass on to a family member or friend for this year’s Christmas gifts.
  • Get your kids involved too.  Kid’s love to be part of the Christmas festivities!  Get them to go through their toys they don’t play with anymore and pass them on to other kids for Christmas.  Just make sure they’re clean and work!
  • Give to your favorite “green” cause or charity in the name of your friend or family member.
  • If you are wanting to buy new:
    • Eco-friendly GiftsSupport your local businesses rather than heading to the BIG BOX stores  (if you have a local business or product, let us know!)
    • When you buy local - you help your own economy and reduce transport emissions
    • Ask where and how products are made and what they are made of (fair trade? supporting that community? resources staying in the community?  Is it harming people or the planet?)
    • Ask what the health impacts are for you and your family
    • AVOID buying one-time use or disposable items
